In 2019 we moved to a home overlooking the Salish Sea, with an overgrown landscape and room for an art studio. In 2020, it has provided both safety and confinement from the pandemic. 

The silver lining of this isolation has been time for exploration in the dye studio. I delved into ice dyeing, using ice to retard the fixing of the dye and splitting colors into their molecular components. I used shibori techniques of folding and binding with wax resist to create geometries of color and texture. I recorded the native and invasive plants that grow on the property with dye prints of cedar, sword fern, and Himalayan blackberry. Stitch added both embellishment and bound the finished pieces.

In these techniques and processes there are connections to experience: the muse becomes the method becomes the muse. Melting ice reminds us of the shrinking ice caps and the threat of global warming. Shibori, with its techniques of binding and resist, echoes our current confinement. The grand cedar trees on my property have been topped to protect the views of those living uphill. Subtle references to windows suggest the shifting of light through panes of glass, a reminder of the passage of time, hope in the darkness.
